Roman Bronze Works, New York

Smoking with the Spirit of the Buffalo is a compelling bronze sculpture by celebrated American Western artist Charles Marion Russell, renowned for his intimate knowledge and sensitive portrayals of Native American life and the American West.

The composition depicts a Native American man engaged in a sacred pipe ceremony, seated before the skull of a buffalo. Raising his pipe toward the heavens, he invokes the return of the great buffalo herds that once sustained the Plains tribes. The buffalo represented far more than sustenance; it was central to the spiritual, cultural, and material life of these communities.

Russell's sculpture captures a deeply contemplative moment of prayer, remembrance, and hope, reflecting the profound relationship between the Plains peoples, the natural world, and the spiritual significance of the buffalo.

Modeled in 1914, the composition was produced in a limited number of bronze castings through several foundries. This example bears the R.B.W. mark of Roman Bronze Works, New York, along with Russell's signature, copyright symbol, and distinctive longhorn skull cipher.
