Today we break down one of the most disturbing days of testimony heard at the Madlanga Commission so far.
Major-General Lesetja Senona testified about WhatsApp messages he says were sent to him by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi — messages Senona believes crossed the line from professional communication into intimidation.
At the centre of the testimony is controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, and a name that was initially withheld from the commission because the person was described as “dangerous”: Steve Motsumi.
According to the testimony, the messages reference alleged meetings, recordings, cellphone triangulation, vehicle tracking, and the potential exposure of sensitive information involving senior figures including Sibiya, General Nkuwa, and Steve Motsumi.
We go through this testimony red flag by red flag, examining:
Why a name was redacted for safety reasons
Whether fear and retaliation are influencing testimony
Why a police commissioner may be linked to protecting a controversial figure
And what this reveals about power struggles at the highest levels of law enforcement
This is not speculation — this is a careful analysis of sworn testimony presented before a public commission of inquiry.
