Cricket has been cantering under saddle since 2015, but between 2019 and 2021, we started training for dressage with an increased focus on improving the quality of the canter.
I have included as many clips to demonstrate the before and after as well as some of the exercises we practiced to make him more supple, forward and sitting back on his hind end which all ultimately led to a better quality canter.
This video focuses only on the right lead canter, which was the weaker lead before and ended up becoming Cricket's stronger canter lead, so the difference is easier to see.
Between 2020 and 2021, I had Cricket's stifles injected. His stifles had always been weak and the strengthening work I was doing with hills and ground poles wasn't enough to make him comfortable. Once he was feeling more comfortable behind, he was finally able to step underneath himself more and build the muscles he needed to sit back and develop a higher quality canter.
