Gender Differences in Mental Health

Описание: In this lecture, we think about gender differences in mental health, focusing in particular on: (i) the fact that women are twice as likely as men to have a mental health condition, which the World Health Organisation (WHO) attribute to gender based violence, lower socioeconomic status and lower average income; (ii) biases in diagnosis, which lead to more diagnoses of mental illness in women than in men; (iii) Broverman and colleagues’ 1970 paper, which described the parallels between healthy ‘adult’ and healthy ‘male’ behaviour drawn in clinical diagnoses; (iv) Kaplan’s 1994 research, which established the ‘peak ages’ for schizophrenia diagnoses in men and women; (v) some key differences in schizophrenia symptoms expressed between men and women; (vi) Szymanski and colleagues’ 1995 study, which found that women were diagnosed with more disorganised subtypes of schizophrenia than men; (vii) Loring and Powell’s 1988 study, which found that men were diagnosed as having schizophrenia more often than women, even when presenting the same symptoms; (viii) the phenomenon that depression is diagnosed more often in women, which has been explained by the proposal that it is more socially acceptable for women to talk about their emotions.
