After Mexico gained its independence, it faced severe economic struggles and internal revolts. But things really took a turn for the worse, when Texas declared its independence in 1836. And Nearly a decade later, it was annexed by the United States, which resulted in increased tensions between the two nations.
That same year, President James K. Polk, who had long set his sights on California and other territories, decided to make an offer of roughly $25 million. However, his offer was swiftly rejected. This didn’t sit well with Polk, and he chose to take a more aggressive approach.
He ordered U.S. troops to occupy the disputed area in Texas, resulting in the start of the Mexican-American War. After two years of intense fighting, the U.S. emerged victorious and Mexico was forced to sign the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, further ceding California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado and Wyoming to the U.S.—all for just “$15 million”.
