The hotel/resort was originally named the "Stratosphere Hotel, Casino & Tower" and was named after the stratosphere in Earth's atmosphere, as a reference to the height of the tower. In January 2020, the resort was rebranded as the "Strat Hotel, Casino and SkyPod". At 1,149 feet, it is the tallest freestanding observation tower in the US, and the second-tallest in the Western Hemisphere, surpassed only by the CN Tower in Toronto, ON Canada. It is the tallest tower west of the Mississippi River, and also the tallest structure in Las Vegas and in the state of Nevada.
