Playing my new kora for the audience on a nice evening of African Music in Global Dance Lab Amsterdam.
Miniyamba is the story about a mythical snake who helped a pregnant woman with the birth of her baby in the forest. In another version of the story the snake swallows a whole village to bring the people to a more prosperous place. Great job indeed!
Since the story comes from an oral tradition there is another version of the story in which virgin girls are being sacrificed to the snake which will bring prosperity in return. The story about the snake is related to the old Ghana empire (no historical connection with the modern-day state Ghana). This empire well known from its gold trade dates back more than thousand years and was succeeded by the Malian empire (Sunjata Keita).
