Japan’s roads aren’t really being damaged when workers punch holes into fresh concrete—it’s actually smart engineering. The holes are part of a permeable road system designed to let rainwater flow directly into the ground instead of pooling on the surface. Plastic panels with cone caps are placed before pouring concrete, then once it hardens, the caps are broken open and the holes are widened. Finally, they’re filled with gravel or plants, creating natural drainage. The result: no puddles, no runoff, and roads strong enough to handle even heavy trucks.
