Former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been arrested for allegedly misusing government funds, according to AFP. Authorities claim he used state resources for personal purposes during a stopover in London in September 2023, while returning from the G77 summit in Havana. Wickremesinghe and his wife attended a ceremony at the University of Wolverhampton, and police allege that government funds covered his private travel and security expenses. Wickremesinghe denies the charges, stating his wife's expenses were self-funded. He became president in July 2022 following Gotabaya Rajapaksa's resignation amid economic crisis, and was credited with stabilizing Sri Lanka’s economy, but lost his re-election bid in September 2024.
