Welcome to the Full Circle Interview Series.
This series is about sitting with leaders whose work completes a circle—between craft and conscience, between storytelling and responsibility.
Long before Yoga Gives Back, my life was shaped by documentary filmmaking. I spent over 30 years working as a documentary filmmaker for NHK-Japan’s National Public Broadcaster, using film as a way to witness the world, to ask difficult questions, and to hold space for truth. I thought I could voice for the voiceless.
That is why today’s conversation feels especially meaningful to me.
My guest is Nisha Pahuja, an award-winning filmmaker whose Oscar-nominated documentary To Kill a Tiger bears witness to extraordinary courage—following a father and daughter in rural India as they refuse silence and demand justice in the face of gender-based violence.
In a small Indian village, Ranjit wakes up to find that his 13-year-old daughter has not returned from a family wedding. A few hours later, she’s found stumbling home. After being abducted into the woods, she was sexually assaulted by three men. Ranjit goes to the police, and the men are arrested. But Ranjit’s relief is short-lived, as the villagers and their leaders launch a sustained campaign to force the family to drop the charges. The film did not end when the credits rolled.
It grew into a living movement—#StandWithHer—continuing education, dialogue, and action. It became a campaign for gender-based violence.
So in this dialogue with Nisha, I explored what happens when film moves beyond storytelling—when it becomes a tool for change.
