In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 3 Topic 10 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 3 (1754-1800).

As the United States began to operate under a new Constitution, the presidency of George Washington set all kinds of precedents. Two of the most enduring were the establishment of a presidential cabinet and the two-term tradition.

Also under Washington's presidency, he had to contend with many conflicts, both domestically and internationally. Domestically, Hamilton's use of the elastic clause to establish a national bank caused party tensions to flare among the Federalists and the Democratic Republicans. Also Washington dealt with the Whiskey Rebellion, which had a much different outcome than Shays's Rebellion under the Articles of Confederation.

Internationally, the U.S. had to contend with the possibility of aiding France in the French Revolution and the subsequent wars with Britain. Ultimately, Washington issued a Proclamation of Neutrality in the conflict.

The second president, John Adams, got into some rocky territory with the Alien and Sedition Acts, but to his credit, he kept America out of war with France.
