Dwi Pada Sirsasana — also known as Both Legs Behind the Head Pose — is one of the most challenging postures in the Ashtanga yoga system. It demands extreme hip external rotation, deep lumbar flexion, spinal mobility, and inner calm.
This pose isn’t about showing off — it’s about cultivating precision, control, and surrender all at once.
Here’s how it works anatomically:
The hip joints must externally rotate fully while maintaining grounded sitting bones
The hamstrings and glutes need to release without force
The spine flexes forward, but the core stays active to protect the lower back
The shoulder girdle supports the arms as they cross behind the body and hold the feet or ankles
Breath remains steady — without tension, without ego
