Cedric Fireplume emerged from the misty hills of eastern Jamaica in the early 1970s, a soft-spoken yet fiercely conscious roots singer known for blending Nyabinghi rhythms with hand-built bamboo instruments. Raised in a rural farming community, Cedric absorbed folk chants, revival hymns, and street-corner drumming long before stepping into any studio.

By 1973, he had become a regular presence at Kingston yard sessions, where his haunting falsetto and poetic fire-imagery lyrics earned him the name Fireplume—symbolizing spiritual smoke rising from oppression. Unlike many of his peers, Cedric rejected commercial pressure, choosing instead to record sparingly and perform mainly at community gatherings, Rastafari celebrations, and protest rallies.

His music focused on ancestral memory, self-reliance, and inner liberation rather than political slogans. Though he released only a handful of limited-press singles between 1974 and 1977, they quietly circulated among selectors and sound systems, gaining cult reverence.
