All the chatter about the demise of a football program that came into the season 31-2 in the Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division over the past five years has been silenced. The 0-3 start against three ranked teams in their respective sections created a lot of doubts outside the Salinas High locker room. Inside, the reigning five-time champions remained united. The Cowboys began defense of their divisional title Friday, turning to a defense that has played well all season in a 27-0 win at Soquel. Noah Gonzales was nearly flawless through the air, completing 15-of-16 passes for 140 yards, connecting with Angelo Cimino on a touchdown pass. He also added 59 yards on the ground. The absence of a trio of starters on offense has enabled Zenk to tap into his depth, as Nolan Borel rushed for 70 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Nathan Vasquez and Gonzales combined for 105 yards on the ground. Anchored by Joshua Na’s 2.5 sacks, Salinas created four turnovers in stretching its streak of not allowing a touchdown to eight quarters. It has held three teams without a touchdown in the first half this year.
