as someone who got into every school she applied to (all 17), & graduated from the dream school of dream schools (yale), i hate to break it to ya: now (winter/spring of junior year) is the best time to start your college apps. why? because good writing takes time—if you think you can last minute write a stunning essay that’s going to capture who you are & sweep college admissions officers off their feet, well, hats off to you.

I certainly could not have done that.

I started drafting my college essays in junior year spring.

The first essay I ever wrote (for my AP Lang class) was a bad attempt at a “metaphor” essay. you know the ones: the costco essay, the letter S essay. mine was a “bus” essay (i was a public bus commuter girlie) that tried too hard to capture everything in my life. I was too ambitious in scope, & I was also writing what I thought admissions officers wanted to read, based on the “successful” essays I had read at the time.

The second essay I wrote would ultimately become a hefty supplemental essay I would end up using for numerous schools, including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Princeton, Columbia, UC Berkeley, & more. Ultimately, I decided it functioned better as a supplement because it captured more of the WHAT i do, rather than the WHY behind what I do.

The third essay I wrote I didn’t even write it for my college essays. I wrote it for funsies. I wrote it really for my mom, & saw it more as a creative non-fiction piece than a college personal statement. It was my mom who read it & suggested I send it to every college I apply to as my Comm App Personal Statement with a suspicion that it could change my life.

She was absolutely right.

9 drafts later, that essay got me into every school I applied to, including all 8 ivy league universities. more than that; it went viral across the globe, touching readers across oceans.

I wouldn’t have “discovered” this piece if I hadn’t given myself time, & started the brainstorming process early.
