Joanne "Jojo" McDuffie was the true and only lead singer of the Mary Jane Girls, the others filling out the group's sexy style and appearance. On the studio recordings, JoJo was lead vocals and backed by session vocalists rather than the other Mary Jane Girls. This is something many do not know.

Rick James was frequently backed in his studio recordings by Jojo, Lisa Sarna, and Tabbi Johnson as well as live performances starting in 1979. Rick James was backed by JoJo and used the moniker Mary Jane Band, a subgroup of Rick James' backing band, the Stone City Band. JoJo learned choreographed dance routines.

In 1982, Rick James proposed to Motown that JoJo be offered a solo career but miscommunication caused the label to sign an all-female group, which they determined would be the Mary Jane Girls. Rick James filled the positions behind JoJo with " Cheri" Wells, "Candi" Ghant and "Maxi" Wuletich. Rick james also wrote all the original songs and produced all the recordings with JoJo.
