Take a train ride from Bristol (Temple Meads) to Severn Beach, apart from the modern rolling stock it is a journey back in time.
During the early to mid-20th century Severn Beach was the place to visit, to spend time there on holiday. Why, you may ask, would anyone want to spend a week here, alongside the Severn Estuary with mud for a beach and chemical works in the distance towards Avonmouth?
They did stay here, as the postcards shown in this film show. We are talking of a different period in time, no Prince of Wales Bridge crossing the estuary to Wales, no chemical works in the distance, simply a peaceful village with seaside amenities for the visitor.
It was a fact that large British Rail posters would be on display at railway stations in Scotland saying what a wonderful destination Severn Beach was.
Today all those amenities have gone, the only part I recognized was the rank of shops in Beach Road.
The rail journey was the best bit, from Bristol down to the Avon Gorge, along the river to Avonmouth then alongside the Severn Estuary to Severn Beach.
