Digging a Little Deeper into ETL for NG9-1-1 GIS Data - June 22, 2021

Local GIS data models and schemas for address points and road centerlines vary greatly and evolve based on locally requirements and tasks that GIS is asked to meet. The NENA GIS Data Model Standard provides a roadmap to what next generation core service (NGCS) providers expect, but the standard is also clear that "it is not expected that every entity will use the GIS data model described within this standard for its day-to-day internal use and maintenance but it is expected that each entity will be capable of exporting their internal GIS data model into a given GIS file format that complies with this standard as frequently as may be necessary (NENA-STA-006.1.1-2020 p17). The data management concepts, geoprocessing steps, and routines that meet this need are commonly referred to as extract, transform, and load, or ETL. This presentation gives an overview of ETL concepts before turning to a specific use case of loading local road centerlines into the NENA GIS Data Model.

Instructors:

Matt Gerike, PhD, GISP is Geospatial Program Manager with Virginia’s 9-1-1 & Geospatial Services Bureau, focusing on GIS in Next Generation 9-1-1 and supporting local governments and PSAPs across the Commonwealth. He has managed GIS offices and projects in local government, worked with state-level GIS clearinghouses and data development projects, and has taught GIS, mapping, and geography courses at several colleges and universities. Matt is the Chair of URISA's Professional Education Committee.

Jeff Ledbetter, GISP, ENP has been working with GIS technology since 1998, and in 9-1-1/Public Safety applications of GIS since 2009 when he joined the Greater Harris County 9-1-1 Emergency Network in Houston, TX as the GIS Manager. Since then, he's been the Program Manager for the San Diego Regional Public Safety Geodatabase program in San Diego, CA, and is now a Public Safety GIS Expert with Michael Baker International's Public Safety Solutions practice. Mr. Ledbetter focuses on GIS projects for NG9-1-1, Computer-Aided Dispatch, police/fire operations, and emergency management. Mr. Ledbetter is a member of the URISA NG9-1-1 Task Force and NENA's Additional Data workgroup, and holds certifications as a GIS Professional (GISP) and Project Management Professional (PMP).
