There are many mystics and yogīs all over the world, but Lord Kṛṣṇa is the master of all yoga systems. Kṛṣṇa explicitly and succinctly states the essence of the Bhagavad-gītā's instructions at verse 18.66: "Fully surrender unto Me alone." One who does so is the topmost yogī. Vyāsa was the spiritual master of Sañjaya, and Sañjaya reveals that it was by Vyāsa’s mercy that he could understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This means that one has to understand Lord Kṛṣṇa not directly but through the transparent medium of the bona fide spiritual master, although it is true that the experience is still direct. This is the mystery of the disciplic succession: when the spiritual master is bona fide, one can hear the Bhagavad-gītā directly, as Arjuna heard it.
