Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a tax-free saving scheme regulated by the Indian Government. It is a long-term investment scheme with a lock-in period of 15 years. Individuals can start investing in PPF with a minimum amount of Rs. 500 p.a. The interest rate is set and paid by the government for every quarter. But one thing that Investors should note that the interest rate on PPF accounts is calculated on the minimum balance between the fifth day of the month and the last day of the month. Therefore, when one deposits the money before the fifth of every month, he can earn the interest for the entire month. But if someone does it after the fifth day of the month, he will lose out on substantial interest income for that particular month.
