Avalon invites you to experience the imagination’s traverse into the land of literature. Books of both myth and legend have depicted Avalon for hundreds of years, including tales of King Arthur, T.A. Barron’s The Great Tree of Avalon: Child of the Dark Prophecy, C.S.Lewis in the poem “A Nobler Path”, and Emily Isaacson in “Castle Mount” from her first book The Fleur-de-lis. Pulsating with intrigue and poetry, verse and rhyme, the realms of Avalon are filled with characters that will delight and commiserate with you, enchant and surprise you. Plot of movie:
A mother reads to her daughter, and they pass through the silver gate to the land of Avalon. Avalon is the land of myth and fairytale, where Aurias, with long streaming red hair, is Queen on Castle Mount, but it hasn’t always been that way . . .
Originally Aurias and her younger brother Opheus were raised by three witches in a small cottage. When Opheus is old enough he becomes a knight and sets out to avenge his mother’s death. His mother Ethany was killed by barbarians. While he is gone, Aurias, who has reached sixteen, is kidnapped by the Count and forced to live at the castle of My Eternal Rose and be married to him. Opheus then sets out to right the wrongs done against her by travelling to the castle. He tells her to go to the Doorkeeper, a prophetic wizard-like character, who weaves a tapestry with gemstones inlaid in it from a giant loom. She asks him for help. He cautions her to escape from the castle and float down the river under a tapestry to another time. She follows his advice and when she does this she travels through the portal from her Medieval world to the 1800’s. Here she discovers the cottage of the Baron and Blithe, a couple who own a castle on the mythical island of Avalon. Their son Ethan is away becoming a mathematician, but he returns and falls in love with Aurias who is staying at his parents’ home. They marry and inherit the Golden Castle of Avalon where they go to live. They have four children named Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer. The land is rich with folklore, and many creatures live there which make for many interesting adventures. The women and children have silver hair and weave flower crowns, living under Aurias in relative peace and contentment. She is sketched by the painter Waterhouse in her castle for her great beauty, and the sketches are the basis for his paintings of Elaine and the Lady of Shalott.

Obsession
The silver gate
was the way I passed through,
and come spring, I shall
read to you …
By the fire,
wrapped in eiderdown,
you smell sweetly
of rose and pine.
Come winter,
I shall sing to you,
all warm under the fir beams
in a blue housecoat,
winter blue.
Come summer,
the grass grown yellow,
the air stinging with honey,
the white river rushing;
I shall decorate the altars
of our fragile candle,
and the wind shall wait
till evening.
Come autumn,
tea piping,
mountains low and
valleys humming,
echo by echo,
I shall recount to you
the years worn—
and the threads shall be
sweeter still.
From “Castle Mount”:
My word to the Lady Aurias, subtle in your honor,
the words of night have wrapped
themselves in your pen,
the prophecy foretold, at Avalon . . .
Emily Isaacson
I dare not go
To dreaming Avalon
Not I alone,
If I were gone, must weep;
Themselves would moan
From glen to topmost steep.
Cold, snow pure wells
Sweet with the spring tide's scent,
Forsaken fells
That only I frequent--
And uplands bare
Would call for me above,
Were I not there
To roam the hills I love.
For I alone
Have loved their loneliness;
None else hath known
Nor seen the goodliness
Of the green hills of Down,
The soft low hills of Down.
C.S. Lewis, A Nobler Path
