On our final video of the Harper House Virtual Tour, Colby discusses the Harper House as a family residence. The house only served as a field hospital for about three days, and the Harper family lived in the home for almost fifty years!
The Harpers owned over 800 acres of land, which was used mostly to harvest tar, pitch, and turpentine from long-leaf pine trees for use in the naval stores industry in coastal North Carolina. To support the Harpers modest farmstead, they enslaved three people in 1860. Listed in the census their names were Alexander, Lucy, and Clarsey (or Clarissa). Due to the standards of the day, however, these people left little record about their experience on the Harper farm or after the Civil War. It is likely the Union Army informed them of the Emancipation Proclamation as they passed by just before the battle of Bentonville, but because they left no record of their experience through writings or documents, we are left only with speculation.
