Australia is the oldest, most extreme continent on Earth, a land of bizarre wildlife and a landscape shaped by massive desert wildfires. We examine the ecology of fire and the highly flammable Spinifex grass that permanently changed the vegetation from dry jungle into the arid environment we know today. This desert is home to unique animals, including the tiny thorny devil lizard that consumes up to 750 ants daily and the ancient echidna. The ultimate survival story, however, belongs to the feral cat. With up to 10 million now in Australia, this formidable hunter is driving native species towards extinction. We then travel to Palm Valley, a protected tropical remnant where ancient, fern-like shrubs survive as a living link to the Red Center's tropical past.
