I know I need to do a longer video with my superb @nationalguitars Style 1 now that I’ve moved past just using my iPhone mic, and am using the @ribbonmics R84A to capture the sound. As usual, I first threw down a rhythm track with my 1939 Gibson L-5, and then played the National over it. As usual, no EQ, just a couple UA 6176 channel strip plugins on each track, another on the master bus, and a little reverb.
Oh, and since I get this question a lot… I use @martinguitar strings! For the acoustic archtops and resonator I use the SP 80/20. My favorite string by a mile!
This style of Chord-melody playing and soloing is my own version of the playing of Allan Reuss, who played with Benny Goodman from 1935-1938 before going onto play with many of the best big bands and combos of the 30's and 40's, before settling into studio work in the late 40's. While there are scant resources for this style of playing, the THIRD volume of my DC-Music School Course is one of best places to start. It contains transcriptions of my improvisations in the Reuss-style over standard tunes, using all of the classic Reuss vocabulary and techniques.
Get it, and the other 2 volumes (mostly CC-style single note playing) at DC-Musicschool.com:
