National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) is one of the most prestigious national level scholarship programs in our country. Its aim is to identify talented individuals and nurture them. This exam is conducted in two stages - stage 1 by state governments and stage 2 by by NCERT. We already have a detailed video on NTSE Karnataka exam, in this video we will focus on stage 1 of Karnataka state.
What is the eligibility criteria for NTSE Karnataka?
● Candidates currently studying in Std. 10th can apply for the NTSE
● Students should have scored minimum 55% (general) and 45% (SC/ST) marks in their 9th class examination
Is there any application fee?
● The application fees for stage 1 varies as per their State/UT
● NTSE Karnataka, for government/aided schools the fees is Rs. 75 (general) and Rs. 20 (SC.ST). For unaided schools, fees is set at Rs. 200 (Gen) and Rs. 50 (SC/ST)
When is the exam conducted?
Stage 1 of the exam is conducted in November every year and stage 2 is conducted in May next year. The application forms for stage 1 Karnataka are released in first week of September.
Students should request NTSE forms from their school itself. The filled in forms need to be signed and attested by the school principal and then sent to Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board.
The results for stage 1 are declared in March.
What is the NTSE Karnataka Exam Pattern?
Stage 1 (State/UT level):
● This will be a state-level exam
● It is a pen and paper mode test
● Stage 1 consists of 2 sections namely - Mental Ability Test and Scholastic Aptitude Test
● The second section i.e. SAT will be based on Science, Mathematics & Social Sciences
● It is an MCQ type test - students must select the most appropriate answer out of 4 alternative options
● It consists of 200 objective questions
● Every question carries +1 mark, no negative marking is applicable for NTSE Stage 1 exam
What is the medium of the exam?
The medium of the test is English & Kannada.
What is the NTSE Karnataka syllabus?
Mental Ability Test (MAT) - This section would test your reasoning ability, ability to judge, think, evaluate a given situation. It will also test your observation skills i.e. ability to visualize space and spatial orientation etc. The section-wise syllabus is mentioned in the video.
Scholastic Ability Test (SAT) - SAT would test you in fields of Mathematics, Science, Social Science. There is no prescribed syllabus for this. However, questions will be based on Karnataka board syllabus of Classes IX and X.

NTSE Karnataka Eligibility - How many students are selected for second stage?
First of all, all students need some minimum marks to "qualify" the exam. Qualifying the exam means passing the exam. For qualifying Karnataka stage 1 exam, students need a minimum of 40% marks (general) and 35% (SC/ST) marks in each paper.
However, qualifying the exam is not enough. To be able to sit in stage 2, you need to score more, as only top 371 students are selected to appear for second stage of NTSE.
Last year, cut-off for sitting in stage 2 was 103 marks (General), 82 (SC) & 75 (ST). This can vary based on difficulty level of paper and students' performance.
