Wealth from Waste
A new intervention is taking shape in Lira City, one designed to tackle waste management while opening up business and job opportunities for young people.
In Lira, the fight for waste is no longer about getting rid of it but about shaping it into opportunity.
Ambience
From household rubbish and abattoir leftovers to e-waste piling up in homes, Lira city produces more than 150 tons of waste every single day.
Bite… .
Now, GLOFORD a local NGO with support from Wood en Saad, is leading a program to turn that waste into wealth.
Bite…
The initiative targets Lango, Test and Acholi subregions helping youth tap into the waste value chain, from sorting and collection to storage and recycling.
Bite…
Officials say businesses responsible for a large share of the city’s waste, must lead in finding solutions.
Uganda produces 600 tons of plastic waste every year. Ninety-four percent is burned, buried, or dumped creating serious environmental and health hazards.
Bite…
Lira has adopted a ‘polluter pays’ model, requiring waste generators to take responsibility.
But some say the charges are too high, and rural areas newly added to the city still need education on modern waste management.
E-waste is emerging as another challenge and with over half of Uganda’s youth out of work, school, or training, the stakes are high.
The project’s focus is clear: reduce and reuse waste, set fair collection systems, ensure safe disposal, engage communities, and measure results.
