Before 2000, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) were largely seen as a fledgling US investment product. Would they even work within the European investment market?
In part one of our history-makers interview series, Manooj Mistry, COO at HANetf, shares his pioneering, behind-the-scenes story of his role in the creation and launch of Europe’s first ETFs, LDRS DJ STOXX 50 and LDRS Euro STOXX 50, which went live on 1 April 2000.
In conversation with HANetf’s Co-CEO, Hector McNeil, Manooj discusses the challenges faced along the way, launching in a brand new market, and what it took to adapt the ETF structure for European regulation, institutions, and investors. He explains how overcoming those hurdles helped establish UCITS as a powerful and enduring investment framework.
You can also watch part two of the series, where Nik Bienkowski, Co-CEO of HANetf, provides in-depth insight into launching Europe’s first Exchange Traded Commodity, Gold Bullion Securities (GBS), in 2003:
