~ Pompeii: Varius and the Little Red Donkey 🌋 🫏

Varius awoke with a racing heart. Today was the day. For months, he had drawn until his fingers cramped, determined to prove himself worthy of Scipio, the old artist who had promised to take him as an apprentice if he practiced until the eighth month. Clutching his finest sketches, he set off, stopping only to gather leftover bread from the baker. Every third day, he fed the birds in the square. But as he scattered the crumbs, the ground trembled beneath him.

A deep, guttural roar rolled through Pompeii, and the sky split with fire. From the looming peak of Vesuvius, a column of black smoke spiraled upwards. The city stirred, first in confusion, then in terror. The boy ran, parchment clutched tight, but the streets had become a flood of desperate bodies. Stones rained from the rooftops. Fire leapt from the sky. He stumbled, nearly crushed beneath the stampede, when a rough hand seized his tunic and threw him onto the back of a familiar small red-maned donkey. Julius.

"Ride, boy," Scipio commanded. "To the south. To the city's edge."

Varius turned to his mentor, wild with panic. “My parents—”

Scipio pointed.The southern district—his home—was little more than a ruin of flame and falling stone. His mother’s garden gate, once bright green, was curling in the fire’s grip. The house walls buckled and fell.

“They may yet live!” Varius tried to jump from Julius’ back, but Scipio caught him mid-air. “Do as I bid thee!”

Tears burned his eyes. “But Mamma and Pappa...”

Scipio exhaled, resting a firm hand on the boy’s shoulder. “Then hear me well. I shall go. I will find them.”

Varius swallowed. “How shall you find me?”

Scipio gave a weary smile. “Anyone with eyes could see Julius a mile off.” He patted the donkey’s red mane, fingers curling briefly in its coarse hair. “Is that not so, old friend?” Julius gave a short, agitated bray, shifting anxiously beneath the weight of boy and dust.

Varius rode. He did not look back. By the time he reached the southern hills, Pompeii was gone, swallowed in a black tide.

He never saw Scipio again. Nor his parents. But he remembered. He cared for Julius until the donkey’s last breath. And in his final days, he sketched Pompeii one last time, as it had been—before the sky fell, before the fire, before it was lost to ash. That final drawing would be remembered for centuries.
