A very common question being asked after an angiogram time and time again is if patients can be benefited with either bypass surgery or angioplasty. Unfortunately, there is no clear answer to this question. It all depends on the patient's factors and also upon the expertise of the doctor who's involved in the patients. Most of the time, the reason why patients being referred for bypass surgery is because of the blockages in their heavily calcified coronary arteries such as the, or in the... bifurcation of the division of the arteries or sometimes it's diffuse disease in the coronary artery. But nowadays we have more advanced technologies being used for angioplasty procedures such as laser, orbital ectomy, rotablation, and intravascular lithotripsy. Even in patients who have a very poor pumping capacity, the risk of angioplasty is minimized by using devices such as Impella, ECMO, or intra-aortic balloon pump and therefore the outcome of these patients after angioplasty is much, much better and the recovery period is much, much quicker. So for these reasons, nowadays most of these countries abroad, angioplasty is being performed more frequently than ever before and the number of bypass surgery has declined over the years. So these kind of patients can be treated with a small pinhole procedure through the wrist and they can have a quick recovery time and can be discharged from the hospital within a couple of days time. And the outcome of these procedures in the long run is much more better with the newer generation of drug-coated stents available in the market at the present time. But however, there are very few patients we feel that sometimes the bypass surgery is better, but most of the times these patients can be treated with angioplasty.
