From the April 18, 1971 episode of the Barbara McNair show, the Cowsills deliver their take on a couple of standards: Peter, Paul & Mary's "Puff, the Magic Dragon" and Bob Dylan's "Blowin' In the Wind." I almost didn't include the former, since there's already a good version of it on YouTube, but decided to toss it in for the purpose of keeping the band's performances on this particular episode complete. The Cowsills only performed two songs during this appearance; both of which demonstrated Bob's superb skills as lead vocalist. For the "Puff" song the band included Barry, John and Susan, but for the second song the three of them are nowhere in sight and the band becomes a trio of Bob, Paul and Barbara. So what happened to half the band? One can only speculate, so I will. Susan was likely bound and gagged backstage by Bob, Paul and Barbara as retribution for appearing on the Dean Martin Show without them. Barry and John no doubt got the same treatment when they attempted to intervene. There's an untold story somewhere here. Or maybe not.
The two song choices performed on this episode added up to what was surely among the most sedate outings the group ever did. Their set was entirely acoustic with no percussion -- apparently two acoustic guitars and their voices were the only musical instruments they brought along to the gig. And, despite the fact that the performances were quite good, it's puzzling why they chose to do two well-known cover songs when they had a nice collection of original material by that time.
As a side note, this particular episode spawned the widespread "Paul is dead" rumors due to the fact that Paul wasn't wearing a bow tie like his brothers.
