Hailed by the press for “emphatic and warm hall-filling sound” and “moments of magic” in his playing, cellist Alvin Wong has appeared as a concerto soloist in Asia, Australia, Europe and USA. Critics described his recent Italian debut with the Boccherini Concerto “showed remarkable technique…conveyed expressive poetry with great intensity.” As a recitalist and chamber musician, Alvin toured China, southern Europe and the U.S., performing in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Seoul Arts Center, and Hong Kong Cultural Centre. An advocate for new music, Alvin has premiered concertos and works written for him by Grammy Award and Pulitzer Prize winners.
Dr. Alvin Wong gives masterclasses in Australia, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and across the U.S. He is an AMEB examiner and former Lecturer in Cello at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, The University of Melbourne. As a teacher, Alvin is known for his in-depth understanding of the mechanics of cello playing, musicality and communicative power. He is most interested in developing each student’s individuality by customising his teaching. His students hold orchestral, professional and teaching positions in Australia and Germany, as well as admission to renowned institutions such as Royal College of Music (UK), Cologne University for Music and Dance, and Frankfurt University of Music (Germany). Alvin received his Doctor of Musical Arts from Yale University.
