Pianists STEPHANIE HO and SAAR AHOVIA are among the best-known North American players of team piano repertoire. Stephanie received degrees in religion and piano performance from Oberlin College, attended Northwestern University, and studied with Julian Martin at Baltimore's Peabody Institute. Saar studied at the Tel Aviv Academy and the Musikhochschule Schaffhausen (CH), before pursuing graduate degrees with Leon Fleischer at Peabody. The two met at Peabody while reading through four-hands transcriptions of Beethoven quartets, a project Fleischer encouraged. Stephanie and Saar married in 2005.
In their ongoing, probing recording studio work, Duo Stephanie & Saar rediscover repertoire with concomitant classical and contemporary sensi-bilities. Bach Crossings, the duo's début album on New Focus Recordings, does insightful justice to György Kurtág's whimsical, soulful four-hand Bach transcriptions. Their initial album in a series traversing all of the four-hand transcriptions of the Beethoven string quartets bears the incisive title, Beethoven Dialogues. Inevitably, they circled back to Bach with The Art of Fugue, which they recorded variously solo and on two pianos.
The duo are also the founders and artistic directors of the Portland-based Makrokosmos Project, an acclaimed new-music festival in Oregon that showcases American composers of our time. Among the many featured composers are Kenji Bunch, Gabriela Lena Frank, Caroline Shaw, Julia Wolfe, John Luther Adams, Karen Tanaka, Michael Johanson, and Alexander Schwarzkopf. The duo are big audience favorites at [Le] Poisson Rouge, New York City’s hip arts cabaret, always selling out their regular shows at the club. Stephanie and Saar are also irrepressible outdoor enthusiasts who can often be found perched atop granite boulders high on the Appalachian Trail in the Northeast, or hiking backcountry trails along the high peaks of the Pacific Northwest (when free of snow).
