On the morning of August 27th, 1896, the island of Zanzibar woke up to war — and just 38 minutes later, it was over. This brief but intense conflict erupted after the death of the pro-British Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini. His successor, Sultan Khalid bin Barghash, seized power without British approval. The British Empire, determined to maintain control, issued an ultimatum demanding Khalid’s surrender. When he refused, British warships opened fire on the palace.
Within minutes, the Sultan’s defenses were destroyed, his palace set ablaze, and his flag shot down. By 9:40 a.m., the war had ended — making it the shortest recorded war in human history. Sultan Khalid fled to the German consulate, and the British installed a compliant ruler.
Though it lasted less than an hour, the Anglo-Zanzibar War remains a powerful reminder of how swiftly empires could shape nations through force — and how fleeting even a war can be.
