From the RCIA Guide: "141 The scrutinies, which are solemnly celebrated on Sundays and are reinforced by an exorcism, are rites of self-searching and repentance and have above all a spiritual purpose.

What are the Scrutinies? On the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent, the newly named “Elect” participate in three successive rites called “the Scrutinies.” These rites, with roots dating back to the early Church, take place during the Sunday Mass, each thematically linked to the Gospel reading for that Mass.
What are The Scrutinies?
The first Gospel (the Samaritan Woman at the well) tells us that Christ is the Living Water,
The second (healing of the man born blind), that he is the Light of the World,
The third, (the raising of Lazarus from the dead), that he is the Resurrection and the Life.
