In the annals of aviation history, few accidents are as heartbreaking and preventable as the crash of Aeroflot Flight 593. On the night of March 23, 1994, an Airbus A310-304, registered F-OGQS and named after the Russian composer Mikhail Glinka, departed Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport bound for Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. On board were 63 passengers—many of them businessmen from Hong Kong and Taiwan seeking opportunities in post-Soviet Russia—and 12 crew members. Among them were the family of relief pilot Yaroslav Kudrinsky: his 15-year-old son Eldar and 13-year-old daughter Yana. This was their first international flight, a special treat arranged through Aeroflot’s employee perks.
