There is a quiet scenic road in to Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway. It's the B725. Part of this road borders the River Nith between Dumfries and where the river forms an estuary with the Solway Firth. There are occasional stopping places. This was taken from one of those.
Twice a day the tide floods in to the wide estuary of the River Nith allowing salmon and flounders to come and go. Haaf Net fishing was prevalent in this area, a type of fishing where Haaf netters would stand in a line chest deep in the channel on both the flood and ebb tides catching salmon in their nets. The sand and mud flats also provide an important habitat for wintering wildfowl and wading birds.
