Juan Carlos I, King of Spain, received on Thursday the 1997 World Statesman Award from the Appeal of Conscience Foundation.

The Foundation aims to promote religious tolerance and freedoms throughout the world.

Spain's King, Juan Carlos I, was the guest of honour Thursday night at a gala dinner in New York.

The Appeal of Conscience Foundation presented him with its prestigious 1997 World Statesman Award.

The King was honoured for promoting understanding between Christian, Jewish and Islamic leaders.

President of the foundation, Rabbi Arthur Schneier, hailed Juan Carlos I as the "King of all Spaniards" and declared Spain as a success story of democracy.

Juan Carlos was delighted to receive the award - a hand-formed eagle balancing atop a solid crystal ball.

He told the audience that religious tolerance should be reached in the world.
