As I continued my deep dive into the diverse world of New York City’s best food, I knew I had to try some food from a country I’ve recently fallen in love with: Georgia! Join me as I try some incredible Georgian food, including khinkali and khachapuri, in NYC!
Georgia is a country in the Caucasus Region at the crossroads between Asia and Europe. They use lots of fresh herbs and ingredients in their cuisine, which is heavy on meat, dairy, and walnuts!

For this adventure, I linked up with my friend Marina, who is from Ukraine. We couldn’t wait to have some cheesy khachapuri and Georgian wine at Cheeseboat Restaurant!
Cheeseboat Restaurant is a cozy and rustic Georgian bistro in Brooklyn with lots of wooden tables. They have a bar where they have lots of wine options. Georgia is famous for its wine!
We went with a Mosmieri 2018 amber dry Kakhuri wine from the Kakheti region, the main wine-growing region in Georgia. They say they invented wine and make the wine in qvevries, or clay pots in the ground.
The wine was so unique! Then, our khinkali, or Georgian soup dumplings, arrived. You grab it by the handle, nibble a hole in it, and then suck the juices out before eating the rest except the handle. They came with an amazing minty sauce!
Next, they served us some chacha and then I went into the kitchen to watch them made some Adjarian khachapuri. These are boat-shaped khachapuri from the Adjara region, which contain a ton of melted cheese, butter, and an egg yolk.
You mix the egg and butter in with the hot cheese. It becomes super creamy and rich! Then, you tear a bit of bread off and dip it into the cheese!
Next, we tried their honeycomb brie Adjarian khachapuri, which would be sweet and savory. It was like a dessert khachapuri and kind of reminded me of a cinnamon bun.
Then, we had the chacha, followed by the steak ’n mushroom khachapuri. It’s one of their seasonal khachapuris! The mushrooms and steak were earthy and meaty and tasted amazing with a bit of plum sauce.
Under the mountain of meat and mushrooms is the cheese! It was fantastic with the minty sauce, which was a little spicy!
Next, we had mtsvadi, which is essentially grilled pork. These were pork ribs with roasted pepper and a rich tomato sauce. They were somewhat similar to Chinese ribs I’d had.
What an incredible way to finish an incredible night in Brooklyn!
