It’s always interesting what you’ll find in your travels. In Paola, Kansas, there is an old convent set in a beautiful campus that I was told to visit for the architecture alone. While there, we discovered something that looked like an old castle sitting alone on the northeast corner of the campus. The sign inside the structure stated that it was called “Sacred Heart Shrine.” It was built in 1916 as a mini replica of the Rheinstein (or “Rhinestone”) Castle on the Rhine River in Germany (itself built in 1316). The shrine is constructed of petrified-formation stone. The original statue of Jesus at the Sacred Heart used to sit on the alter but is now gone as of July 2018. It’s a small shrine, probably little less than fifteen square feet. However, the stone and workmanship of it is impressive. Sacred Heart Shrine can be found at the (former) Ursuline Convent and Academy at 901 East Miami Street in Paola, Kansas.
Filmed with an iPhone 6s while walking over rocky stone. 😉
