Hainan Province, the southernmost island of China, is home to Hainan gibbon, a species endemic to this nation. They are labeled as the most endangered primate by International Union for Conservation of Nature. In the 1980s, poaching, deforestation and a changing environment slashed the gibbon population to 7 to 9 individuals, making it one of the rarest primates in the world.
However, tough conservation efforts from central to local governments are helping the population to rebound to a number of 35 gibbons in September, 2021. We will look into how the population of human's closest relatives were brought back from the brink in today's episode of National Park of Hainan Tropical Rainforest, one of the countries first national parks.
