This Dutch Pour was a lot of fun to make... I love this color combination! And I am amazed by the cells I got from the Atelier Payne's Grey - it was my first time using it. I'm sure I'll find more uses for it!
One of the tools I used here is part of a Dutch Pour Straw Kit that I ordered from JnLDesignGroup on Etsy. If you'd like to purchase one, here is the link: https://www.etsy.com/listing/96375646...
This painting was for a commission, but unfortunately, the client changed their mind and wants a different color scheme. No hard feelings - I'm happy I did this painting and I'm sure someone else will love it. So if you are interested in purchasing - let me know! I can ship worldwide.
Here are my Keys to Success:
1. Consistency of your mixed paints should be thin - it should leave a trace when drizzled off of your stir stick that disappears quickly and should not leave a mound. My paints were just slightly thicker than typical for most of my Dutch Pours because I wanted to make sure the blues and pinks stayed separate rather than blending to create purples.
2. Let your paints sit for several hours before using them to reduce the amount of air bubbles when you pour. As a general rule, the thicker the consistency of your paints, the longer it takes for the bubbles to rise through the paint and release. For these thin consistency paints, I let them sit (covered) for about 6 hours before using them.
3. I find I get much more control of my composition if the base coat is just a thin layer - I blow off as much as I can before adding my blowout colors.
4. No need to use silicone for cells with a dutch pour - just make sure to use a couple of metallic colors and you'll have plenty! Layer the metallics between non-metallics for the best results. Different paint brands cell up more than others- experiment with different combinations of brands (not just colors) and you will discover them - like I did with the Atelier Payne's Grey in this piece!
5. I was specifically interested in a traditional Dutch Pour Blow Out composition with this piece, with lovely defined petals stretching from one side of the canvas to the other. So I layered my paints in a line, one on top of the other. There is almost no wrong way to layer the colors here - just do what feels right. I tend to switch back and forth between lighter and darker colors for maximum contrast and depth.
6. Once you've layered your paints, start the blow dryer up high and slowly lower it until the paint starts to move. This is to help control the movement of the paint.
7. Blow your colors ACROSS the base coat, not into it.
8. I use the straw with the 3D printed diffuser to adjust the shape of the petals. It focuses the air flow and softens it a bit, so the paint doesn't move as quickly. The curved metal straw I use to roughen up the edges to make them look more natural and organic.
13. I know I may have made this look easy - but this technique takes PRACTICE! Be patient with yourself and don't expect it to come out perfect the first time. Mine sure didn't!
Good luck and have fun!
Base Coat Color:
Amsterdam Brilliant Blue
Blow Out Colors (in order):
Amsterdam Titanium White
Amsterdam Permanent Red Violet Light
Atelier Series 2 Payne's Grey
JoSonja Pale Gold
Liquitex Basics Deep Violet
Arteza Pearl Tangerine
My pouring medium is 25% Floetrol, 25% PVA Glue, 25% gloss varnish and 25% distilled water.
My paints are mixed 2 parts pouring medium to 1 part paint, and then I add small amounts of distilled water until I reach the desired thin consistency.
