Faceboy hosted the open mic at Surf Reality on the Lower East Side each Sunday night and I would go to those and his best friend Reverend Jen's "anti-slam" each Wednesday night around the corner at Collective Unconsious. I was 19 at the time and working at the 92nd Street Y summer camp, and living in Spanish Harlem with my friend from uni, Avery.
This performance is special on a number of levels including the fact that the great Rob Shapiro was in the audience (you can hear his laugh) and after he came and told me that my set was "the reason he does comedy." RIP Mr. Shapiro.
Special thanks to Faceboy and RevJen for giving us artists a space and a community! I tried to replicate this in Sweden where I moved and the open mic here is alive and well since 2009 although there's no place like NYC.
