This video shows how I layered color to create Pearlescent Steps. Beginning with a bright transparent pigment, like quinacridone red, gives a glowing interior. A veil of reflective gold increases the inner light and tones down the high chroma. Successive translucent layers builds a surface that radiates the energy from beneath. Finally, thick opaque passages of latex paint are laid down in subtle shifts of chromatic variation. The trick here is to keep the value consistent - lights with lights and darks with darks. Raking the paint lightly over the surface allows the final layers to be thick and forceful.
