Did you know that Turkey and Syria almost went to war twice in the 20th century?
The first time was in 1957, when Ankara accused Damascus of getting too close to the Soviet Union. Turkish forces moved toward the border — until Egypt and Saudi Arabia stepped in to prevent an escalation.
The scene repeated itself more than forty years later, during the 1998 crisis, when Turkey accused Syria of supporting the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). This time, Ankara threatened direct military intervention, before Egypt and Iran intervened to calm the situation.
