Here's a long video showing the process I went through to check and correct valve clearances on my built 2jzge engine by removing and replacing the valve shims with the cams still in place.
I realized in editing that i didn't show how I used a digital caliper or micrometer to measure the shims to determine the shim sizing, but that should be self explanatory. Remove the shim, measure the existing shim, compare to your feeler gauge measurements to determine whether you need a thicker or thinner shim, and then put the correct size shim back in. Recheck clearance after replacing the shim.
This head had a valve job performed on it at a machine shop, but the cams and buckets were installed later. I strongly advise everyone to check the valve shim clearances on their cylinder head after getting it back from a shop to make sure it really is good to go. It's a very tedious process and you must be patient and careful because you can damage components. I made this video because I didn't see many other detailed videos showing this process, but please consult an engine builder if you are unsure of how to accomplish this task. If you need additional shims, they can be purchased from any lexus parts website.
I attempted to avoid buying new shims and spent hours at my local junk yard pulling shims from several different toyota engines that use the same shim size. I found a few in the range I needed, but ended up having to buy several to finish the job. Feel free to give feedback or ask questions in the comments.
