January 26 is celebrated as Republic Day in India, but in Indian-occupied Jammu & Kashmir it is observed as Black Day. For the Kashmiri people, this date represents the imposition of the Indian Constitution in 1950 without their consent, in violation of internationally recognized UN resolutions.
Every year, Kashmir observes complete shutdowns, peaceful protests, and symbolic resistance to reaffirm the demand for the right to self-determination. Heavy security measures, curfews, and mass arrests on this day highlight the absence of public consent and the ongoing political dispute.
The situation intensified after 5 August 2019, when Articles 370 and 35A were unilaterally revoked, stripping the region of its special status and leading to prolonged lockdowns and communication blackouts.
This video highlights why January 26 is remembered as Black Day in Kashmir and calls on the international community to recognize that lasting peace is only possible through the will of the Kashmiri people, in accordance with UN resolutions.
