Purim – A Jewish Celebration of Deliverance and Joy

Purim is a Jewish holiday celebrated on the 14th of Adar (or on the 15th in walled cities, known as "Shushan Purim"), commemorating the salvation of the Jews in the ancient Persian Empire from annihilation planned by Haman the Agagite, as described in the Book of Esther. The holiday is marked by joy, costumes, the reading of the Megillah (Book of Esther), giving food gifts (Mishloach Manot), charity to the poor (Matanot LaEvyonim), and a festive meal (Seudat Purim).

*Origin of the Name and Biblical Story*
The name "Purim" comes from the word "Pur," meaning "lot," referring to the lottery Haman cast to determine the date for the planned destruction of the Jews. The Book of Esther recounts the story of King Ahasuerus, Haman’s plot to destroy the Jews, Mordecai the Jew who thwarted the plan, and Queen Esther who courageously approached the king to save her people. As a result, the Jews were spared, and the holiday was established for future generations.

*Purim Commandments and Customs*

1. *Reading of the Megillah* – The Book of Esther is read twice, once in the evening and once in the morning. It is customary to make noise when Haman’s name is mentioned, symbolizing the obliteration of his memory.

2. *Mishloach Manot (Food Gifts)* – Sending portions of food to at least one person, reinforcing social and communal bonds.

3. *Matanot LaEvyonim (Gifts to the Poor)* – Giving charity to at least two needy individuals, ensuring they can also celebrate with joy.

4. *Seudat Purim (Festive Meal)* – A joyful feast held during the day, featuring food and drinks. It is customary to drink wine to the point where one cannot distinguish between "Cursed is Haman" and "Blessed is Mordecai."

5. *Costumes and Masks* – A tradition that began in the Middle Ages, where people, especially children, dress up in various costumes, symbolizing concealment and fate.

6. *Purim Spiel* – Theatrical and humorous performances based on the Purim story, once popular in Jewish communities in Europe.

*Fast of Esther*
On the 13th of Adar, the eve of Purim, Jews observe the Fast of Esther, commemorating the fast undertaken by the Jews before their battle against their enemies.

*Purim in Walled Cities and Shushan Purim*
In cities that were walled in the days of Joshua, such as Jerusalem, Purim is celebrated on the 15th of Adar, known as "Shushan Purim," in memory of the fact that the Jews of Shushan battled their enemies for an extra day.

*Purim Katan (Little Purim)*
In leap years, when there are two months of Adar, Purim is celebrated in the second Adar. However, the 14th of the first Adar is marked as "Purim Katan," without the observance of Purim commandments but with some added joy.

*Parodies and Additional Traditions*
Purim is also characterized by humorous parodies of biblical and Talmudic texts, reflecting the holiday's festive and lighthearted atmosphere. Various communities have developed unique traditions, such as burning effigies of Haman, singing special songs, and eating traditional foods like Hamantaschen (Oznei Haman).
