How to use RTV and properly make a gasket
Silicone can be used to make a gasket in place of a traditional gasket material. Here are the general steps for using silicone to make a gasket:
1. Clean the surfaces where the gasket will be applied using a degreaser to ensure that they are free of oil, dirt, and debris. If the surface is rough, it may be necessary to sand it smooth.
2. Cut a small amount of silicone sealant from the tube and apply it to one surface in a continuous and even bead. Use enough silicone to form a layer that is about 1/8 inch thick.
3. Apply the second surface to the silicone-covered surface. Press the surfaces together until the silicone bead flattens and spreads out evenly.
4. Allow the silicone to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions. This may take several hours or overnight.
5. Once the silicone has cured, remove any excess silicone that has squeezed out around the edges using a scraper or a razor blade.
It is important to note that using silicone to make a gasket is not suitable for all applications. In some cases, a traditional gasket material may be necessary to ensure proper sealing and prevent leaks. It is recommended to consult a service manual or a qualified mechanic for specific instructions and recommendations for your particular vehicle and application.
