Mangla Dam Lake in Pakistan
The Mangla Dam was built between 1961 and 1965 on the Jhelum River in the Mirpur District of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Located about 108 km southeast of Islamabad, it consists of a reservoir, main embankment, 5 tunnels, and a power station. In addition to the Mangla Dam, the area around the reservoir is home to the Ramkot Fort, which was built in 1798.
The Mangla Dam was raised by 30 feet, allowing it to restore water to its normal storage capacity of 6,65 million acre-feet. Until Aug. 24, the previous record for Pakistan's largest reservoir was held by Tarbela Dam. The Mangla Dam is now capable of storing nearly 7 million acre-feet of water, making it one of the largest earth-fill dams in the world. The additional water can be used for irrigation, hydel electricity, and other uses.
The Mangla Dam is an eight-acre multipurpose dam built in the Mirpur District of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan. Its name is derived from the village of Mangla, which is located near the mouth of the reservoir. The dam's contractors were selected in November 1961. The British engineering firm Binnie & Partners was chosen as the lead contractor for the dam's construction, while eight American companies were included in the Mangla Dam Contractors consortium.
The Mangla Dam is Pakistan's second largest dam, and it is 67 miles south of the capital, Islamabad. The Mangla Power Station is the second-largest hydropower station in the country and the twelfth-largest hydropower station in the world. The reservoir is surrounded by mountains, and the dam is a great recreational destination. There is also fishing and boating in the lake.
If you're looking for a serene place to relax, you've come to the right place. Mangla Dam Lake is located across the Jehlum River in Azad Kashmir, just west of the city of Mirpur. It is conveniently located near the Jari Kass Park, Kotli Road, and Asifa Bhuto Park, which is located on the Pearl Continental Hotel's grounds. The lake also offers boating, jet skiing and parasailing facilities, which cost very adequately.
The main spillway carries 650,000 cusec of water into the reservoir. The auxiliary spillway has nine gates. A group of four tunnels on the right bank were cut through the rock-covered valley wall. Three were intended for hydro-power generation, while the fourth tunnel is for irrigation releases. The fifth tunnel was built on the left bank of the river and became operational in 1976. This dam also serves as a reservoir for irrigation.
