Long range fpv drone flight to the peak of a dormant volcano. I'm having another try at some cinematic fpv drone footage. Diving mountains with an fpv drone is so much fun!
There's an amazing ridge line leading to a peak made up of tall skinny volcanic spire formations. I believe the large spire is a volcano plug that has been exposed over the last few ice ages as a combination of glacial ice weight and melt have washed away more than 1/4 of this old crumbling volcano's volume. In a few parts of the video you can see signs of columnar jointing created by cooling lava and it becomes obvious how large portions of the volcano could be brought down by glaciers. On one side this heavy erosion has removed the entire exterior of crumbling rock and exposed a plug of denser volcanic rock with a higher iron content. This is magma that cooled within the vent of the volcano.
The height of the incredibly steep sides was the driving force behind my determination to fly this mountain. "I'm going to dive that crazy mountain one day" I said about a year ago. Earlier this summer I made 6 flights to the peak and used clips from 4 of them for the video.
(BTW there's also a "water slide" hundreds of meters long cut into the rock, which is of course part of the dive!)
I'm often asked about how I get such good video and transmitter range. The biggest improvement for most will be from upgrading their antennas. I use these ones (Airblade UAV affiliate links):
Goggles TrueRC - X2-AIR: http://bit.ly/3hKcXeS
VTX TrueRC - Singularity: http://bit.ly/2L2YONN
Crossfire Receiver TrueRC - Bardpole: http://bit.ly/38eIhzm
The quad:
Frame: 6 inch FlosStyle (with dead cat arms of my design)
GoPro mounted on top
Camera HD: GoPro Hero 6 Black (with Camera Butter ND filter)
Rx: TBS crossfire nano diversity
Flight controller
ESC: Diatone 40amp from MK2 stack, DO NOT use the F405MK2 FC with BF 4.1, I find it to provide unreliable GPS function.
Motors: racerstar AirA 2508 1200kv
Props: Gemfan 6040 (for this video)
Fpv cam: runcam micro eagle
GPS: BN-880
VTX: Eachine TX-805 800mw
VTX antenna: True RC singularity
Transmitter: taranis X9D with TBS crossfire micro Tx
Goggles: Orqa FPV.One (Amazing Goggles!)
Goggle antennas: True RC X-air and a 6 turn helical that I made.
Batteries: DIY li-ion 6s packs using either 18650 or 21700 cells.
Music all from youtube audio library.
